Textiles
Why We Use These Textiles
Our textiles are selected for beauty, durability, and legacy.
We choose designer upholstery fabrics and heirloom-quality materials because they offer richness, strength, and story. Each fabric is carefully selected to help transform every journal into a keepsake that can be treasured now and passed down for generations.
Every fabric begins with a fiber. Different fibers have different strengths, textures, and ways they age over time.
Natural Fibers
Cotton
-
Soft, breathable, and familiar.
-
Takes color beautifully and feels “comfortable” in the hand.
-
When woven in heavier upholstery weights, cotton can be quite durable, especially if treated with care.
Linen
-
Made from the flax plant; known for its strength and elegant, slightly textured look.
-
One of the oldest, most time-tested fibers in the world.
-
Excellent for heirloom pieces because it ages gracefully and develops a soft, lived-in character
Semi-Synthetic Fibers
Viscose/Rayon
-
Made from plant cellulose (wood pulp or bamboo) that is processed into a silky, drapey fiber.
-
Often blended with cotton, linen, or polyester to add softness, sheen, and rich color.
-
On its own, viscose is more delicate; in blends, it adds beauty while the other fibers provide strength.
Synthetic Fibers
Polyester
-
Man-made fiber known for its strength and resistance to stretching, shrinking, and wrinkling.
-
Commonly blended with natural fibers to improve durability and stain resistance.
-
In upholstery-weight fabrics, polyester helps your journal stand up to everyday handling.
2. Weaves & Textures You’ll See Here
Beyond the fiber itself, how a fabric is woven affects its feel and longevity.
Linen & Linen-Look Weaves
-
Smooth to lightly textured surface with visible weave.
-
Classic, timeless, and refined—perfect for a clean, tailored look
Velvet
-
Plush surface with a soft “pile” you can brush with your hand.
-
Looks luxurious and rich, especially in deeper tones.
-
Best displayed and handled with a little extra care: keep away from rough surfaces that may crush the pile.
Jacquard & Damask
-
Intricate woven patterns (florals, scrolls, motifs) created in the loom, not printed on top.
-
The design is part of the structure of the fabric, which makes it more long-lasting.
-
Excellent choice for heirloom pieces because the pattern doesn’t “wash off”—it’s woven in.
Chenille / Textured Weaves
-
Soft, dimensional surface with a cozy, touchable feel.
-
Adds warmth and character to your journal while still being sturdy when made with upholstery yarns.
About Our Materials
Fabric Knowledge:
Choosing Materials That Stand the Test of Time
Textiles
When you choose an heirloom journal, you’re not just picking a pretty cover—you’re choosing a fabric that will live on bookshelves, coffee tables, and in the hands of your children and grandchildren.
This page is here to help you understand the fabrics I use, why I chose them, and how to care for them so your journal stays beautiful for years to come.
Every fabric chosen for a Still Speaking™ Heirloom Journal has been selected with the utmost thought, care, and reverence for both quality and legacy. I work exclusively with high-end upholstery and designer textiles—fabrics known for their durability, richness, and timeless beauty. Each weave, pattern, and texture is hand-picked not only for its visual elegance but for how it will feel in your hands and how it will endure through generations.
These are not everyday materials. They are upholstery-grade, heirloom-quality textiles sourced from fine design houses and luxury mills—chosen intentionally to reflect the weight of your story and the beauty of your faith. My goal is simple: to craft journals that will look as exquisite decades from now as they do the day you receive them.
Every journal begins with prayer, design, and the careful pairing of these fabrics so that each finished piece tells a story of quality, devotion, and enduring grace.
Every stitch on a Still Speaking™ Heirloom Journal is chosen with the same care as the fabric itself. I use Madeira embroidery threads because they are known worldwide for their exceptional quality—beautiful sheen, clean stitch definition, and dependable strength that holds up over time. When a journal is meant to become a keepsake, the thread cannot be an afterthought. It has to be worthy of the legacy it’s helping to carry.
Madeira threads are designed to embroider smoothly and consistently, creating monograms and crests that look crisp, refined, and professionally finished. Their color depth is rich and timeless—whether you choose a soft neutral, a classic black, a luminous gold, or a bold signature shade. This is the kind of thread that doesn’t just “look pretty” on day one—it’s chosen to endure, so the embroidery remains as meaningful years from now as it is the moment you open your journal.
Threads
From the first letter to the final stitch, the goal is always the same: lasting beauty, lasting strength, and a finish that honors your story.

Gentle Design Tips
Designing Your Heirloom:
A Few Gentle Tips
These little guidelines are here to help you feel confident as you design your bespoke heirloom journal. Think of them as a friendly nudge in the right direction, not rules you must follow, just what tends to look most beautiful in person and in photos.
Background
Start with a calm background
Solids or subtle, smaller scale patterns usually show monograms best. When the fabric is quiet, the lettering becomes the star instead of competing with the print.
Personality
Let the recipient’s personality guide your choices
-
For a classic, elegant feel: choose softer, neutral fabrics and timeless scripts.
- For a bold or playful personality: consider richer colors or a slightly larger, more dramatic monogram.
Imagine the person holding this journal in their hands, that mental picture is your best design guide.
Big or Small
Think about scale: not too big, not too small
-
On simple or solid fabrics, a larger monogram makes a stunning focal point.
-
On patterned fabrics, a medium-sized monogram often looks more refined and stays readable.
If you’re in doubt, choose “medium” for a balanced, classic look.
Short and Sweet
Keep wording short, sweet, and readable
If you add a name, date, or short phrase inside the journal:
-
Short lines stitch more clearly and are easier to read.
-
Double-check spelling, dates, and capitalization—this is a keepsake meant to be treasured for a lifetime.
Thread Selection
Choose thread colors that truly stand out
For your monogram to be easy to see, the thread should contrast with your fabric. Busy prints or similar tone threads can cause the monogram to get lost. As a general rule, think “a few shades lighter or darker” rather than “almost the same.”
Script or Block
Script vs. block: pick the mood you want
-
Script styles feel romantic, feminine, and flowing.
-
Block styles feel tailored, clean, and timeless.
If you’re unsure, a simple, graceful script in a medium weight is almost always a beautiful, “can’t-go-wrong” choice.
Monogram Order
Monogram order: a quick guide
If you’re personalizing with initials, here’s the traditional approach:
-
Individual (three-letter script monogram):
Left = first name, Center (larger) = last name, Right = middle nameExample: Emma Grace Thompson → e T g
-
Couple (shared last name):
Left = one partner’s first initial, Center (larger) = shared last name, Right = other partner’s first initial
Neutral Solids are Safe
When in doubt, choose soft neutrals
If you’re stuck, you can almost never go wrong with:
-
A light or neutral fabric, and
-
A soft, contrasting neutral thread (ivory, champagne, soft gold, charcoal, etc.)
This combination feels elegant, photographs well, and suits any age or occasion.
We are here to help
You don’t have to design it alone
If you’re overwhelmed by choices, you’re not doing it “wrong.” You can always tell us a few words like “classic and timeless,” “feminine and soft,” or “bold and modern” and allow us to suggest combinations that reflect your heart for the person you’re gifting.

Pricing as Personal as Your Story

Monogramming & embellishment – from simple initials to ornate crests
Your journal can be as understated or as elaborate as you wish.
Each piece is completely customized to your style and your budget, allowing you to build an heirloom that feels just right—for your hands, your home, and the generations who will one day hold it.
Frequently asked questions
How long will it take to receive my journal?
Each Still Speaking™ Heirloom Journal is custom crafted just for you. Current production time is approximately 14 to 30 days before shipping. Once your journal is finished, you’ll receive tracking information so you can follow its journey to you.
Can I send you a journal I already have, to be installed in a Still Speaking™ case?
Yes. You may send a journal you already own to be installed inside a Still Speaking™ heirloom cover, as long as it fits within our size range (generally 7" x 9" or 8" x 10", hardbound preferred). After you place your order, you’ll receive instructions on where to ship your journal. You’ll be responsible for shipping it to me, and I recommend using a tracked, insured service.
Are the journals refillable? Can I replace the inside book later?
These journals are designed as heirloom keepsakes, with the book permanently installed into the fabric-covered case. They are not refillable like a binder system. The intention is that once this journal is full, it becomes a keepsake and you may begin a new Still Speaking™ journal for the next season of your story.
Can I order a journal without a monogram?
Yes. While monograms are a beautiful part of Still Speaking™ journals, they are optional. You may choose to leave your journal unmonogrammed for a more minimal look or for situations where you’d like the focus to be on the fabric and forward.
Do you accept returns or exchanges?
Because every Still Speaking™ journal is custom made to your selections, returns and exchanges are generally not available. However, if there is a problem with craftsmanship or your order arrives damaged, please contact me within 7 days of receipt, so we can make it right.
I don’t know what to choose. Can you help me design my journal?
Yes, I would be happy to help you. If decisions feel overwhelming, I can guide you through each step—or even design the journal for you based on a few details about the person and the occasion.
However, if this is a gift from you, I always encourage you to be part of the choices. The way you see the person—the colors you think of, the style you know they’d love, the words you choose—that is the most beautiful part of the journal. When they open it, you’ll be able to smile and say, “I chose that for you.”
What if I don’t like the textiles you’re offering and have another fabric I’d prefer to use for my heirloom journal?
I would be honored to work with a fabric you’ve personally chosen. As long as the textile is suitable for bookbinding (upholstery or decorator weight is ideal), I will gladly accommodate it.
You’ll simply follow the same process used for sending a pre-existing journal: place your order, select the “customer-supplied fabric” option, and I’ll send you instructions for mailing your fabric to my studio. Once it arrives, I will carefully inspect, prepare, and install it on your heirloom journal so your piece truly reflects your taste and story.
I don’t know what to write for the forward. Can you help?
Absolutely. If you’re unsure what to write, you may select the option to use a Still Speaking™ Forward—a pre-written, heartfelt message that honors the value of the recipient’s life, wisdom, and story. You may also select “No forward” if you prefer to leave that space blank or write in it by hand later.
How do I submit my forward after I order?
After checkout, you’ll be directed to a page where you can type or upload your forward, using the same name and email you used at checkout. You’ll also have the option to mark “Use Still Speaking Forward” or “No forward” if you’re not writing your own.
What size should I choose—Keepsake or Legacy?
The Keepsake Journal (7" x 9") is a more intimate size—perfect for daily reflections, prayers, and shorter entries.
The Legacy Journal (8" x 10") offers more space for longer stories, family history, and entries you intend to pass down. Both are crafted with the same heirloom-quality fabrics and construction; the choice simply depends on how much room your words and keepsakes need.
Do you offer custom monogram designs or special requests?
Yes. You may choose from single-letter, full-name, and interlocking monogram styles, including specially licensed designs from Anamored. If you don’t see your initials or style in the options provided, you can submit a request, and I will let you know what is possible for your specific journal.
Can I rush my order?
Because each journal is handcrafted and prayed over, I work at a careful, steady pace. Occasionally, I may be able to accommodate a rush request for a specific date (such as a wedding, graduation, or memorial). If you need your journal sooner than the stated production time, please contact me before ordering, and I’ll let you know what is realistically possible.
Will I see a draft before you stitch my journal?
Yes. Once you place your order, I will create a rough digital draft of your chosen monogram, font, and layout so you can see how everything will look together. You’ll be able to confirm spelling, initial order, and overall style before I begin stitching.
How long does it take to receive my draft?
Drafts are typically emailed within 24 hours on business days. During holidays or high-volume seasons, please allow up to 2 business days. If you need your order sooner, you’re always welcome to contact me before ordering to confirm timing.
